How can we help?
Most questions are answered below. If yours isn't, use the form at the bottom and you'll hear back from the person who makes the app.
Which iPhones does BookWorms run on?
Any iPhone running iOS 17 or later. It's an iPhone app; there's no iPad or Android version.
The barcode scan isn't picking up my book.
Hold the barcode inside the frame and keep it still for a moment. The outline fills as it reads; moving the phone or losing the code resets it. Old, damaged or library-relabelled barcodes sometimes won't scan.
If the scan won't take, tap the camera to photograph the cover instead, or search by title, author or ISBN. You can also type the ISBN from the copyright page.
The cover in the app isn't the one I own.
Open the book and tap Change cover. You can pick another edition from the gallery, look one up by ISBN, or photograph your own copy. Changing the artwork doesn't change the book's identity or your ranking.
How do rankings and scores work?
When you mark a book as read, BookWorms asks how it felt overall and then shows you pairs of books from your own shelf. Each answer places the new book relative to the others. Scores come out of those comparisons, so they shift as you add and compare more books. A book you've only just ranked shows a provisional score until it has been compared a few times.
You can rank any book again from its page. DNF books are kept, shown to friends if you share your shelf, and never scored.
Can I bring my Goodreads history across?
Yes. Export your library from Goodreads as a CSV, then in BookWorms go to your profile and choose Import. Your shelves, star ratings, reviews and reading dates come across; imported reviews stay private. Goodreads shelves called dnf, did-not-finish, abandoned or unfinished land on DNF. Duplicates are skipped.
Do I need an account?
No. Shelves, rankings, notes and your reading life all work without one. An account is only needed for reading companions and book clubs. You can sign in with Apple or with a one-time code sent to your email.
How do I add a reading companion?
Go to Your circle and search for their exact username. There's no suggested-friends list and email addresses aren't searchable. They'll get a request to accept. What they can see depends on what you've chosen to share in Account settings.
What do my friends see?
Nothing until you turn on shelf sharing. After that, accepted companions can see your book titles, reading status and rankings, and your scores count once in the friends' average. Notes, imported reviews and your own cover photos are never shared. Feelings stay private unless you choose to share them for a particular book.
What's included in BookWorms Plus?
Plus opens up your friends' shelves, what they're reading and have just finished, and individual scores with your friends' average. It's $0.99 a month after a 14-day free trial, billed through the App Store, and renews until you cancel it in your Apple Account settings. Restore purchases from the Plus screen if you've changed phones.
Everything else is free: your library, rankings, memories, importing, and joining, voting and commenting in clubs.
How do book clubs work?
Clubs are private and invite-only. Members suggest books from their own shelves, vote on what to read next and comment on each book. Only the book details are shared; your notes and memories stay with you. A badge shows when there's new activity, and you can mute updates per club. Leaving a club removes your votes and comments.
How do I export or delete my data?
Export your library at any time from your profile. Delete your account from Account settings; this removes your active cloud records. Deleting the app deletes the on-device library, so export first if you want to keep it. The privacy policy has the detail.
